I just remembered this: The WIC vouchers towards fresh fruit and vegetables do not apply to potatoes.

I want to believe that decision was based on keeping WIC recipients healthy - or something. But the cynic in me thinks some lobby, maybe the National Corn Growers Association, had influence. I mean, why nix potatoes but cover such an array of ready-to-eat breakfast cereals? Frosted Mini-Wheats? Cinnamon Corn Flakes?

I usually acknowledge my cynicism as a factor in my opinions. When it comes to WIC, however, I don't think it's cynical to think it was essentially put together by special interest groups through lobby.
I will say they made some nice additions (dried beans!), but overall the program is still pretty awful (nutritionally speaking...in my opinion).
