What makes this corn different? It's meant to be eaten fresh from the cob. Monsanto's previous GE corn was only used as livestock feed or in processed foods.
We will now be presented with fresh corn-on-the-cob at grocery stores and farmers markets, in frozen and canned packages, that will be genetically engineered. The corn will not be labeled as such. It will be indistinguishable from non-GMO corn.
Trader Joe’s and General Mills have said they will not use Monsanto's GE sweet corn in their products.
Here's the cover letter that was sent to a number of food companies (e.g. Wal-Mart, Kroger, Safeway, Bird’s Eye, Del Monte) asking them to reject the new GE corn.
They don't even have to reject it. Just label it.
For shame! But there's no bottom to the depths these corporations will sink in their pursuit of ever-larger profits. Damn the consequences for real people.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to add the USDA and FDA to your assessment, Mel. They could require more testing or regulate a label if they wanted.
ReplyDeleteBut if it is labeled then it will be rejected.
ReplyDeleteHow about that.
